Some of us like a GIANT BRIAR, sometimes. The trick is to have or find the time, to smoke one. Why? Because larger pipes insulate heat more efficiently, and absorb heat and moisture better than a small thin walled pipe. Basic thermodynamics of heat transfer. No, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to smoke and enjoy one. Niether do you have to earn a six figure salary, to obtain one. Look at the top quality larger pipes--and yes, they ARE on the expensive side. The reason being--they are cut from larger, giant blocks of briar wood--which generally comes from more ancient and larger briar--thus more costly chunks of briar burl--to become an extra large pipe. Be thankful that you don't live in a place in the world that charges $10 per OUNCE of tobacco-like some places I know--just in the good old USA is pipe tobacco at reasonable rates--YES--we can afford to fill those GIANT pipes! The other places enjoy a market of smaller bowls-because of the high cost. If you like your SUV--you might like an extra large briar. How can you get a deal on a GIANT? Look at the basic law of nature of pipe makers. So many "firsts" and a lot more "seconds", made of the same wood--with a few little flaws--most ALL briar HAS FLAWS, anyway. Now we introduce the Savinelli BARONET BRIAR EXTRA LARGE SIZE PIPES, that our friends at www.OutwestTobacco.com will soon be stocking for you at a really reasonable price. While you're at it --get yourself some quality Bulk tobacco to complete the deal. Nest time that 2 hour movie or ballgame comes on--just fire up the big Savinelli, sit back, relax--and enjoy the benefits of an armchair pipe that smokes cool and LONG. A word of advice--fill up the pipe only 1/3 of the way up on the first few smokes to find out your "tobacco limit", and to help build up a cake, from the bottom up. The Baronet briars at www.OutwestTobacco.com are available in the Savinelli shapes, denoted by the size "EX". Please see www.Savinelliusa.com

Bjarne Nielsen and his crew of employees have been making excellent briar pipes since 1973. There are many Danish pipemakers, today--that you could concievably spend thousands of dollars for their beautiful works of art--if you are lucky to find them, much more AFFORD them, it all depends on what you want. I kind of look at the situation like cigars--a great cigar is a rare treat--but I'm more interested on THE BEST ONE FOR MY MONEY THAT I CAN ENJOY ON A REGULAR BASIS. And so it is the same belief I hold for pipes-I try to smoke the best quality for what I can afford to spend--a matter of simple economics and priorities. I finally realized a real fact--Bjarne pipes look and smoke GREAT--for my money. I hope you discover this for yourself. I'd rather have a few nice Bjarne's pipes, used daily and enjoyably, than to worry about a high grade--life's too short. You may disagree, and if you've the means to smoke the super high grade pipes, please do so--because you must be blessed! Please enjoy the new selection of Bjarne Pipes at www.OutwestTobacco.com --Thanks, -Eric
Recently returning from the Chicagoland Pipe show, I drew upon a few conclusions: It was INDEED many wonderful events at different locations within the Pheasant Run resort, the people who attended the show all had shared interests, there were A LOT of people having a grand old time, it was a "humbling" experience, within the vast resources of knowledge, experience, expertise--and the most wonderful part of it for me--I met people from all over the world, tobacco and pipe professionals who are good will ambassadors of their crafts--willing to lend assistance and help their fellows shedding some light, for the benefit of simply--your happiness and mine, as well. Please look forward to some more blog entries here, about experiences at the show, and also some new announcements at www.OutWesttobacco.com

Smoking a pipe allows you to do several POSITIVE things:
1.) You can enjoy the World's Finest Tobaccos in your pipe-and have a wonderful variety of choices of those tobaccos.
2.) Pipe tobacco can be enjoyed at a MUCH lower cost than cigarettes or cigars. A pound of pipe tobacco will provide around 40 pipefuls or more, depending on the size of bowl on your pipe--and give you an average of 45 minutes to an hour of smoking pleasure, with each bowl.
3.) After you smoke a pipe--YOU STILL HAVE A FINE PIPE. When you smoke a cigar or cigarette, it's GONE.
4.) You can still find a decently priced and good quality pipe, for little money compared to the price of a carton of cigarettes. The secret to this is to select briars that are slightly flawed, but still have a good integrity. Select your pipes with no flaws or putty fills on the inside of the bowl, and no varnish on the outside of the bowl. A sandblasted pipe is an excellent value, because most pipe makers produce them to eradicate the outside blemishes--and they are still made out of quality briarwood that has been cured the same as high-grade, flawless, pipes, which command higher prices. Example: you may purchase several excellent Savinelli Antique Shell pipes (sandblasted and carved) for the price of one high-grade (Savinelli Autograph)--and the pipes will smoke the same--because the briar used for them all is CURED THE SAME.
5.) Pipe smoking will allow you to slow down, relax, and enjoy life more! -ETW

Meerschaum pipes have stood the test of ancient ages, when the material they are made from, was discovered, deep within the red clay of the Earth, on the plains of Anatolia, several hundred years ago.
Actually a mineral from the Earth, Meerschaum is useful to the world of pipe smokers, because of several qualities it has: lightness of weight, porosity, a natural filter, an easily carved artistic medium, and it improves as it is smoked--it changes colors from white, gradually to a golden yellow, then tan to dark cherry red, over the years of smoking, with improvement of flavor of a mellowness that has to be experienced to understand. A well smoked meerschaum pipe can be passed on to future generations of the family--as it can bring good luck, too!
Once the pipe of nobility, today there are meerschaum pipes that just about anyone can afford. Please be aware of a few things before you purchase your first meerschaum pipe: Be sure the pipe is advertised as "Block Meerschaum", from Turkey (the highest grade in the world), avoid "pressed meerschaum", deal with pipemakers who have been around awhile (their reputations of quality products and good business practices have been proven). Make certain the pipe has a custom fitted leather covered wooden case, as your pipe will survive better over time while stored in this case, when it is not in use.
Some of the meerschaum pipes are ornately carved by hand, each pipe as individual as your fingerprint. Every imaginable shape or sculpture can be carved with a meerschaum pipe, or you may opt for a standard classic shape, as I tend to enjoy.
Exactly--A Meerschaum Pipe Is Made To Be Enjoyed.

On the 11 th of November, 2006, I again had the pleasure of Mr. Bjarne Nielsen’s company, and friendship. He is indeed a remarkable man from Lyngby, Denmark, which is a suburb of that beautiful city of Copenhagen. Part of the beauty of Denmark is the design, culture, art and old world craftsmanship of the Danish people, who craft some of the best pipes in the world. Bjarne pipes are an excellent example. He has a workshop there, and several craftsmen who create the completely hand made pipes that bear his name.
Each pipe is first started on a lathe. No two are alike—because each is made as individual as your fingerprint. I was looking through approximately 300 of his pipes, and I noted that the larger freehand pipes were light as a feather, because the wood is so well aged and cured, saps and bitter resins naturally found in briar—are absent. This is why the pipes smoke so dry and sweet! The attention to detail on the hand-cut Lucite mouthpieces is impeccable. On a six-sided mouthpiece, the design flowed so well into the shank of one pipe, I could not feel any difference from the transition of the pipe, it was so well made. The polished pipes are as smooth as glass, with no varnish used.
What most impressed me about the Bjarne pipes, is that Mr. Nielsen has made available to pipe smokers throughout the world—a beautiful hand-made Danish pipe that is such high quality, but reasonably priced low enough that a “working man” like myself, can afford to smoke them!
The two hours Bjarne spent with me at the shop was most enjoyable. Bjarne is a world traveler, he speaks several different languages (including “the language of pipes”) and he is a man you can trade ideas and discussions with—person to person. He truly cares about his customers, and their likes and dislikes, and I have not had the company of such a polite and attentive person such as he, in quite some time!
If you ever have the chance to smoke one of the Bjarne pipes, and better yet, to meet Bjarne, himself, you’ve made yourself two new friends!
Savinelli pipes have been around, a long time--for good reason! The consistency, attention to detail, quality and value--and best of all, AVAILABILITY, are some of the great things we can all enjoy today, with a Savinelli Pipe. The pipes come from Northern Italy, made of fine, aged briar. I like the Linea Piu series, as I find them to be a better value, for a totally handmade pipe. The quality in most pipes is easily detected in the attention to detail, most evident in the workmanship of the mouthpiece. The Linea Piu Savinelli pipe my lovely wife Patty gave to me on my birthday, is an excellent example.
The Savinelli Antique Shell pipe is a great everyday working pipe, affordable, durable, has a nice look and feel, and I really enjoy and smoke them a lot. As I cannot afford high grade pipes, I treasure the ones I smoke most! I also discovered that the Antique Shell pipes smoke just as well as the high grade Savinelli's I have!
Please tell us about YOUR favorite Savinelli pipe. You may see more Savinelli pipes at www.SavinelliUSA.com or see the Antique Shell Savinelli pipes at www.OutwestTobacco.com
